News Update[edit]

Heya, Violation is busy today and can't add the news update today. Since you did it on the other wiki did you wanna do it here? (If you have time) -- Fenyx4 (talk) 11:38, 7 March 2014 (MST)

Sure, I'll jump on and get it added as soon as I get the update.. --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 11:43, 7 March 2014 (MST)

Names[edit]

Ha! I've been moving them AWAY from names like "Blades Skill" to "Blades Combat" since that is what DarkStarr had the charts named. Seems like we're working at cross purposes. -- Fenyx4 (talk) 02:17, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

I was just making them consistent with the more common naming, since this hadn't been done yet. Since Skill thread calls them "<Skill> Combat", we can use that. --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 02:57, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Redirects[edit]

Hey, noticed about a dozen broken redirects and double redirect pages and they seemed to have all been from pages you moved and/or deleted to rename. Do me a favor and when you're done doing moves and updates just check the redirects to be sure they're all good. I fixed what I found already. Violation (talk) 02:22, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Location Template Maps[edit]

Example - What do you think? Should I put that in Template:Infobox_Location. In general the map stuff needs more work/features added. But I think it is good enough for this purpose. -- Fenyx4 (talk) 19:06, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, if there Are coordinates, no reason not to show it. Looks good.--Browncoat Jayson (talk) 19:45, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Bone Steel[edit]

Interesting tweet from Lord British: https://twitter.com/richardgarriott/status/506563068428840960

"@RichardGarriott Thanks Ness Creighton for the reference on Bone Steel to be found in Shroud of the Avatar: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/09/090908-taiwan-sword-video-ap.html"

(Edit) The video on that link is unavailable, but I found it on YouTube. -- Browncoat Jayson (talk) 14:58, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Wonder if we could use a similar technique on the wiki? -- Fenyx4 (talk) 18:51, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

Icons[edit]

Hello,

I wanted to upload many missing skill icons but first of all when i upload form game screenshots have small resolution 50x50 pixels. Your and Fenyx4 icons have 250x250 so i assume You have them form "Portalarium".

Small icons look not bad, but when anyone go into icon page ( like here hhttp://sotawiki.net/sota/File:Banish_Undead_Icon.png) then it look horrible.

Next thing i have no idea how to add icons to existing pages, when i do edit there is no code line with icon. I read templates and even added line in infobox skill http://sotawiki.net/sota/Banish_Undead) and still icon don't show. And the same thing with main skill tree for examplehttp://sotawiki.net/sota/Life_Magic i can't icon, nothing cause there is nothing in code.

Hope You can explain me how to do it.

All you need to do is add them with the proper name, "(PageName)_icon.png". It looks like you had "icon" capitalized, so changing that fixed it. Note that these changes to not propagate immediately; you can wait til they do, generally within 8 hours or so, or you can edit and save the page it should appear on to force it to load immediately. I've fixed Banish Undead, and left Healing Burst to propagate. --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 17:44, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
Ok next thing some skills need execution time, and some have fizzle chance but i don't want mess with templates (since creating new one is complicated for me) and right now there isn't any field for these 2 values. Last thing where or how You obtained that good quality icons because that from game are low resolution)

I renamed/moved the page 'Attunement with Earth' to 'Earth Attunement' to reflect ingame name & so the Gems bonus1 (need to rename the decriptions in the Gem pages too :/) field link would work but then lost the icon. Reverted but icon still not showing due to name change. Found icon name so I added it in the infobox but it's still not showing up.--Isycle (talk) 22:44, 25 Mar 2016 (EST)

Redirects[edit]

Just wanted to keep track of these:

Request[edit]

Hello, if you are the wiki master of this site, I would like to have a random page link below the recent changes. --Auri (talk) 14:47, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Done! --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 14:55, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the extra help! Maybe add a sandbox link page below the random page, for the testing area for testing edits. I'd love to become someday an administrator on this wiki project. Let me know when you would like an extra helping hand! I suppose that this wiki is quiet and with less traffic, meaning that you don't have much vandalism to deal with. But if I was an administrator, I'd like to help with protected pages and delete unnecessary pages. Just to give you a heads up! For now, it is a bit too early to become one, so in the meantime, I'm going to do everything positive by raising this wiki to a much higher standard. Even now I know everything about wikis, including the administration and bureaucratic roles. I have even created my own wikis where I was the wiki mistress. I am even an admin on LibrePlanet. I'd also like this wiki in a brighter mode, not a dark one. I can't even see most of it. --Auri (talk) 14:57, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
I'm kind of a lead admin, but we do have a bureaucratic group so its up to them to add folks to tiers. I don't know if they are looking for any new admins at this point, since we don't have a lot of activity.
We probably won't be changing the mode on the wiki, as we are trying to adhere closely to the actual SotA website/forum look. If you'd prefer something lighter, you could modify your personal CSS to get the look you want. --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 16:45, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Simplifying page[edit]

I don't just simplify pages, I also fix grammatical errors too. If there are no pages for me to fix grammar, I will still make an edit on it to space infoboxes. Every edit counts! --Auri (talk) 16:39, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

As I said, if you have actual changes to make, feel free to space out the infobox as well. However, adding spaces alone provides no actual value to the page. We don't worry about post counts here. Thank you for understanding. --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 16:45, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Okay, to make things less awkward, I will only stick to grammatical errors. I will only simplify pages if they need grammar fixing. Probably, give me some pages that need more work. You know more about this wiki than I do, so please, feel free to teach me everything that I need to know. Plus, when pages are too small, there is not much else to add. --Auri (talk) 16:49, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Too much![edit]

Hello, I don't think that this is going to work. Every wiki that I join says the same words that you have said to me. Like I said before if people are too thick to understand (don't mean you), I only fix grammar and nothing else. I don't add information unless I know about it. plus, what is the whole point of telling me that I can't just add spaces when there is nothing else to add to the article, especially when I know nothing about the page, nor when there is no online sources added? If this isn't going to work, could you at least do a decent favor for me? Could you install MediaWiki and create me my own wiki? I tried to do it myself, but my PC is not compatible with the download. I will like the wiki to be called: The Chase Wiki. If you could add the chase logo and the chase favicon. --Auri (talk) 16:58, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

I'm confused why you would join a wiki for a subject you don't know about. I mean, I'm happy to have someone to fix grammar, but most of our topics are small (by design) and just having someone edit them to fix spacing isn't a good use of your time or mine.
Unfortunately, I don't have server access so I can't install anything. I've had to request other plugins and extensions to be added for this wiki. However, you can start your own wiki on any of the public wiki sites, like confluence, wikia/fandom, or wikidot.
Good luck! --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 17:09, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Recipe attributes: Not Teachable, Teachable , Re-teachable and discoverable[edit]

Hi i have been crafting in Sota for 3 months and i have only today gleaned a basic understanding of the three distinct teachable "attributes" and their relation to "discoverability".

Most documents (from other sites) that I come across are flat out wrong (i.e. they refer to some version of Sota that no longer exists). The web is a sea of miss-information about Sota.

The most informative "primers" and "how to" articles that I have read give directions on how to discover recipes that are no longer discoverable.

I am above level 90 producer in most crafting trees (GM blacksmith, GM blacksmith Masterwork and GM Masterwork Blade Weapon) and would have "discovered" as many of the recipes as possible rather than buying them had I figured out how to get a list of "discoverable" recipes for the current release of Sota.

My understanding is now that I simply had to search for "Re-Teachable" recipes on SotaWiki to get a list of discoverable recipes.

Two days ago When I finally found a recipe that was still "discoverable" I felt that I needed to update the WIki and broke it due to my ignorance of the three basic attributes of Recipes (Not Teachable, Teachable , Re-teachable)

Perhaps most new Sota users can easily determine which source to trust on "discoverability" and I am just slow but I would like to propose that SotaWiki recipe pages link to a clarification page that enumerates the number of recipe attributes that relate to "teachability" and "Discoverability".

The YEAR that the information was known to be accurate is also important.

I do realise that i could have asked someone to mentor me in Sota however (outside Sota) the actual cost of believing what some "Self professed Expert" says is usually much higher than the cost of working it out for yourself so I chose to "ask google".

Sorry for making bad edits to the wiki

"edit:" When I read it I instantly dismissed the sentance on SotaWiki Re-Teachable - "Currently, all recipes that are Re-Teachable are also Discoverable by placing the correct items in crafting bench." because I assumed it was a 2014 reference like every other reference to Discoverability.

this wording would have actually made me question if the sentence was still valid or not: "Currently (Jan 2020) , all recipes that are Re-Teachable are also Discoverable by placing the correct items in crafting bench."

Links to the "Explanation of different Teachability of recipe Page" could just be added to the three pages Teachable , Re-Teachable and Not Teachable

I agree, that is a confusing subject. I removed "Currently" from the discoverable section, as its just how it is, and created a Learning topic that shows all of the groups so they can be compared easily. This is now linked to each of the types, as well as the Emotes and Recipes pages. Hopefully that helps.

Don't worry about making edits; if nothing else, it pointed out that this needed clarification in our wiki. I'm glad you were willing to jump in, and I hope I didn't make you feel bad about doing so by reverting some things until we could clarify. Feel free to continue, and if you have any questions about the accuracy of anything, don't be afraid to shoot me a message. Thanks! --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 17:19, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Rise Dog Room[edit]

"The Rise Dog Room" has an entrance and a place upstairs where you can add another room, should connections=2 or connections=1 ?

Good question! I havn't done nearly enough dungeon work as I need to. I'll look into it! --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 17:49, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

"The Rise Dog Room" is an ingredient in a recipe that i have not discovered yet:

RiseDogRoom.png

I can send you a "The Rise Dog Room" and 500 COTOs so you can get as much information as you need about "The Rise Dog Room" and whatever is made by the unknown recipe. (please send back the new dungeon room when you are finished)

I tried sending these items to "Browncoat Jayson" however that player does not exist in SOTA, where should i sent them?

My character in-game is "Jayson Albrecht". I believe the 500 CotO recipe is to either duplicate it or change it between a deco and a spawnable version of the room. --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 16:15, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
Like I thought, this was to turn it into a spawnable version of the room, "The Rise Dog Room w/Spawns". I'll get the information added.

Infobox templates[edit]

Yeah that's fine. What I did was a band-aid anyway. It's Wikipedia 2004 web design, better to redo from scratch. Rigel Kent (talk) 20:29, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Summoning Skill Level Required[edit]

I like Alley Oop's suggestion, "can i request a couple of fields for the creature box? tameable (yes/no) and, if so, summoning skill level required (number)". But that was posted 26 Sept 2021, and I don't see those changes.

  • Traditionally, we define the pet name and required summoning level on individual pages, (each ostensibly describing the taming necklace for one of the creatures which may be tamed). I made some changes to page Taming Necklace Summoning Levels, (recently renamed from Summonable Pets), which tabulates taming necklaces by their required summoning levels. Also, template Taming Necklace (Pet) now uses (non-existent?) category Taming Necklaces, so these dozens of pages no longer clutter up category Pets.
  • Alternatively, I've begun inserting the required summoning skill level, explicitly, into the pages of creatures which are tameable. I created template Summonable for this purpose, (cleverly disguised as a link to page Tamed Pet Summoning Levels): insert it under "See Also". Then page Tamed Pet Summoning Levels tabulates these pets by their required summoning levels.

I like the second approach: It creates the same information, without requiring a separate page to describe each and every creature's required summoning level. On the other hand, I've added a "Last Seen" field to template Taming Necklace (Pet), thus providing a way to determine whether the summoning levels tabulated at Summonable Pets are current. Both approaches are still in use: Tamed Pet Summoning Levels is more complete at present
