A Pattern is a document that can by applied to certain items in order to modify the appearance of these items (it only modifies the visual presentation of the item; it does not alter the stats of the item). A pattern document can only be applied to same type of item from which it derived. For example, a Pattern: Skull Sword (which is derived from a one-handed Skull Sword), can only be applied to a one-handed sword. The sword to which the "Pattern: Skull Sword" is applied will take on the appearance of the Skull Sword.

Pattern Types[edit]

There are two types of Patterns: a consumed pattern (which is labeled as "Pattern" in-game) and an Eternal Pattern (which is labeled as "Eternal Pattern" in-game).

  • Consumed Pattern (also known as a non-eternal pattern) - When a Consumed Pattern is applied to an item, the pattern document is consumed (destroyed) in the process. When an item with a Consumed Pattern is salvaged, it will never yield the pattern document back (i.e. the pattern document was permanently destroyed when it was applied, so it cannot be recovered upon salvage). Items that have had a Consumed Pattern applied to them will have Orange colored title text. Also, in the information that pops-up when you hover your mouse over the item, the title will show as the Patterned Name followed in paratheses by the original name, such as "Bronze Buckled Gambeson +9 (Bronze Augmented Chainmail Chest Armor +9)".
  • Eternal Pattern - When an Eternal Pattern is applied to an item, the pattern document is preserved and fused with the item. When an item with an Eternal Pattern is salvaged, it will always yield the pattern document back (i.e. the pattern document was preserved within the item, so it is always recovered when the item is salvaged). Items with an eternal pattern will state "Salvage Yields: Eternal Pattern:..." in the information that pops-up when you hover your mouse over the item.

Applying a Pattern[edit]

To apply a pattern, you will need to use the appropriate "Reshape" recipe at the appropriate Crafting Station. At the Crafting Station, select the Modifications category, and then select the relevant "Reshape" recipe. The Avatar starts the game with the "Reshape" recipes already in the recipe book.

Rules for Applying Patterns[edit]

  • Armor patterns can only be applied to armor worn in the same slot as the item from which the pattern was derived; however, the pattern can be applied to armor of any composition (Cloth, Leather, Chain or Plate). For example, a chest piece pattern can only be applied to a chest piece; however, you can apply a cloth chest piece pattern to a plate chest piece.
  • All Back Slot patterns can be applied to any Back Slot item (Cloak, Backpack, Quiver, Wings, etc.).
  • One-handed weapon patterns can only be applied to one-handed weapons of the same the weapon type (e.g. a Blade pattern can only be applied to blade weapon, and not to a bludgeon, Ranged, or Polearm weapon).
  • Two-handed weapon patterns can only be applied to two-handed weapons of the same the weapon type (e.g. a Bludgeon pattern can only be applied to bludgeon weapon, and not to a blade, Ranged, or Polearm weapon).

Where to Get Patterns[edit]

  • Consumed Patterns can be obtained by
    • Salvaging equipment items that have not had a pattern applied (these are mainly items obtained as loot from non-player creatures, such as swords, shields, armor, etc.) - when you salvage these items, there is a chance they will yield a consumed pattern.
    • Purchase from NPC Merchants
  • Eternal Patterns can be obtained by
    • Purchased in the Crown Shop in game.
    • Salvaging certain special items (such as some pledge items and special event rewards). Salvaging will liberate the patterm, but it will destroy the item.
    • Using the Reshape Pattern Remover recipe to remove the eternal pattern from an item. This will liberate the pattern and preserve the item (although the item will revert to its original appearance).

Returning an Item with a Pattern to its Original Appearance (Removing a Pattern)[edit]

Patterns can be removed from an item (without destructively salvaging the item) by using the Reshape Pattern Remover recipe with a Pattern Remover at the appropriate crafting station for the item. The recipes for pattern removal are already in your recipe book when you start the game.

  • Consumed Patterns - Removing a consumed pattern will make the item revert to its original appearance, but the pattern document is not recovered (i.e. the pattern document was permanently destroyed when it was applied).
  • Eternal Patterns - Removing the pattern will make the item revert to its original appearance, and the pattern document is recovered (i.e. the pattern is always preserved upon removal).

Recovering a Pattern that has been Applied to an Item[edit]

  • Consumed Pattern - these patterns cannot be recovered from an item because the pattern document was permanently destroyed when it was applied to the item. Therefore, salvaging the item or using a Pattern Remover will not yield a pattern.
  • Eternal Pattern - these can be recovered from by either of the following methods:
    • Salvage the item - this will yield the pattern document, but it will destroy the item itself.
    • Use a Pattern Remover - this will yield the pattern document, and it will preserve the item itself (i.e. it will not destroy it).

Trivia[edit]

  • Patterns were added for Release 39 and were focused on Patterns for gear (armor and weapons).
  • To celebrate the launch of the Patterns system, we are releasing our first pattern the Ornate Flamberge for a limited time! Our very own Fletcher “Skullmuncher” Kinnear designed this beautiful sword and it will only be available through the end of the Spring Telethon. Flamberge Pattern Packs, as well as the weapon itself (with the eternal pattern inside), will be available for purchase in the Add-On Store.[1]
  • In release 86, the restrictions of patterns on specific armor types and cloak slot item types was removed. Weapons however are still restricted to the specific weapon type (Ranged, Bludgeon, Blades and Polearm).[2]
