Kortreek's key unlocked a cable holding a kite, allowing the kite to fly higher. It flew so high that it got struck with lightning! Kortreek said if anything "interesting" happens that I should collect the result from the platform's container. The only thing I collected was a big lump of coal. Hopefully this is what the magic supplies merchant was expecting. I should return to the magic shop in Grusk and give Kortreek this coal.
