- My dearest Hyla,
- I don't know if I'll ever get used to calling you Hyla instead of your given name, Rebecca, but that's not important right now. What is important is that I tell you how much I love you and how proud I am of you. Through this whole ordeal of abandoning our town and making our way to the monastery, you never comnplained and jumped in without hesitation whenever there was something, or someone, that needed help. You are truly an amazing young lady.
- You're growing up so fast, and I wish I could have been there with you far more than I have in the past, but you know the reponsibility I have to not only the Captain, but the Highvale people as a whole. In protecting the people of Highvale, I am also protecting the most important people in my life, and that's you, your mother and brother. It's a job I take very seriously and I hope you understand.
- The reason I'm writing this letter to you is that I am uncertain I will be able to return to you and the rest of the family. This mission to collect supplies has been wrought with peril at every turn. As I write this to you, we've lost several fine guards to ambushing elves and strange ice-ghosts that hunger for living warmth. It's all so strange and terrifying, but it's our sworn duty to be courageous in the face of adversity, to push on through whatever obstacle, and to make sure the mission is a success. To that effect, I and another were volunteered to stay behind and hold off the ice-ghosts while Captain Burnes and another escape to return to the monastery with the much needed supplies. Though I wanted nothing more than to disobey orders and come back to you, I could not. I swore an oath and I know this is for the greater good. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.
- The situation here is dire. My comrade and I are holed up in an abandoned shack deep in a small rock valley near the elven camp. I don't know if it's east or west of the monastery, or north or south. I'm very much turned upside-down out here. And, to be honest, I don't think we'll make it out of here alive. We will fight to our last, dying breath, so know that your father always took the courageous path in everything he did. You have that same courage running through your body, my Rebecca, and I know you will be brave in the coming days, months, and years. I am always with you, and I will always love you and be ever so proud of you, both in this life and the next.
- Yours in courage and love,
- Michael, your loving father
