Crown of the Obsidians are rare coins that can be found throughout New Britannia. They are remnants of the Obsidian Empire, and hold great value both to collectors, and those who study the fallen Obsidians.
These coins (also known as COTOs) can be found occasionally on defeated foes or hidden away in Resource Nodes. Players can also purchase Crown of the Obsidians from other player vendors with gold. These coins can additionally be purchased from the Add-On Store as well as received monthly as a reward from the optional Rewards Program which helps fund Shroud of the Avatar.
These coins are used to make purchases in the Crown Shop, perform maximum durability repairs, and to pay rent on properties.

Uses
Crowns of the Obsidians can be used to purchase items in the Crown Shop.
Crowns of the Obsidians can be combined with any item at the appropriate crafting station to restore that item's maximum durability. Each additional repair will reduce the amount restored.
Additionally, Crowns of the Obsidians can be used to pay rent on a weekly basis for player lots.
Lore
- Crowns of the Obsidians: These very rare coins left over from the age of the Obsidians can be found occasionally on higher level creatures. In later releases, they can be redeemed with trainers, the oracle, and other locations for blessings.[1]
- Blessings of the Obsidians: Collect the incredibly rare Crowns of the Obsidians so that the Obsidian Alchemists in Ardoris, Owl's Head, and Soltown will sell you potions that grant powerful blessings.[2]
- Obsidian Crown Merchants: These Merchants only accept the incredibly rare Crowns of the Obsidians (COTOs). COTOs can be found on just about anything that provides loot (monsters, ore nodes, etc) but appear more frequently the higher the difficulty of the target. For now, Obsidian Crown Merchants only sell the Potions of the Obsidians we introduced in Release 29, but we will be expanding their inventory over time to include various exotic and rare items. These merchants can be found in Ardoris, Brittany, Aerie, and Resolute. Please note that the fictional background for the Crowns (including a line of quests within the Obsidian laboratories of the Epitaph) has not yet been implemented, but we wanted to add a means to exchange these coins as soon as possible.[3]
Trivia
- When first introduced, COTOs had a value of 2500, but no other use. When their use in repairing gear was introduced, their value was reduced to 250, before finally being changed to no value after the Gold Crown was placed in the Add-On Store. Their usage in repair and rent is tuned toward roughly an hour of casual play, so that their value is roughly 3500.
- Physical Crowns of the Obsidians can be purchased from Relics by Rild. (Website can no longer be found)
- Prior to Release 63, values of CotOs were roughly $1 --> 1 CotO. In Release 63, this was changed to $1 --> 100 CotOs.[4]
- Formerly, the following other types of crowns were available. These coins were removed in Release 60 in order to consolidate the currency into a single type.
