A homunculus is a small creature, seemingly a cross between a monkey and a bat. It leathery wings rarely exceed a span of two feet, while its body is about three quarters of that length, not including its short barbed tail. The beast's head bears a crown of horns, and its eyes glow like red embers. A homunculus can be enchanted to relay messages, and occasionally to fight, although it is not much of a danger to man.
In the Blade of the Avatar novel, Aren Bennis has a homunculus pet named Monk.

- Homunculus may be based upon the winged monkeys from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
- Homunculus bear a resemblance to mongbats from Ultima.
