Cave Fables III

The Horse and the Fox

The Horse and the Fox
Author: Fox Cunning

by Fox Cunning

Wandering through the caves in search for food, a Horse found a small pear tree which mysteriously grew out of the rocks next to a pool of murky water.

Seeing that the fruits were still green, there he sat waiting for them to ripen.

Passed there a Fox who was also looking for food, and seeing the tree and the Horse he collapsed groaning, “Oh poor me! I should not have eaten that pear!”.

Thinking that the tree was tainted by the murky water, the Horse snorted and walked away.

Sneered the Fox, and he quickly ate all the unripe pears.

The Old Man and the Fox

When the Winding River went dry a long time ago, an Old Man set forth to the Inner Caves, searching for water. Having filled a leather pouch with some water that was slowly dripping down from a stalactite, he was a-coming back to his settlement when he came accross a Fox who was running with his tail between his legs.

"Where are you coming from, Fox?", inquired he, "And why in such a hurry?".

"Alas!", said the Fox, "Kobolds ambushed me in the dark passage behind me. Barely, I got away with my life!".

"Is that true?", frowned the Old Man, "One thing I learnt from life: trust not the sly Fox!" He imagined that the cunning animal must have been trying to hide great treasure in the gloomy corridors behind.

So he ventured into the passage where sure enough he was ambushed by Kobolds, who made a meal of him.

The Spider and the Ant

The Spider and the Ant
Author: Iazon Paragon

by Iazon Paragon

One day, as a sad young worker ant was foraging food for its colony, it discovered a huge spider spinning a magnificent web.

“Oh Mr. Spider, you are so big and free. You do not follow orders or carry food you’ll never get to eat. You can spend your days building such beautiful webs, and stay out as late as you want. Your life is so much better than mine.”

The large spider paused from its weaving and dangled down, gazing all five eyes at the little ant.

“Sweet little ant, my life is not so grand as yours. Why, when a bird pokes its head into this chamber looking for a meal, and sees a big juicy spider and a small puny ant, which one of us would it choose to eat? And which one of us would live to see another day? This freedom of mine you speak so fondly of comes at a price little one, as I am cursed to spend all my days alone, and when I fall asleep at night I have only this web to protect me. The food you harvest, is it not for a family that shares with you, protects you, and loves you? You would do well to be thankful for your community.”

The ant, now filled with joy that he was not alone like the spider, returned home to his family and never complained of his chores again.
