The three Obsidian Eyes are the lenses collected from the Titan Colossi and brought to the Confluence Podium to enable the reading of the Dirae Prophecy of Evard when it has been assembled from the eight pages of the Dire Prophecy (the Litany of the Dark). The lenses are referred to as the three Obsidian Eyes in the Journal entry for the Unlock and Read the Dire Prophecy quest.

Journal: Once I have all three Obsidian Eyes and all 8 pages of the Dire Prophecy, I must travel to the Confluence. where the Sanctus and Fortus rivers meet near Brittany, and use what I find there to read the Dire Prophecy.[1]

The substance obsidian is a dark, natural glass formed by the cooling of molten lava. Black is obsidian’s most common color. It can also be brown, tan, or green, though. Obsidian may rarely be blue, red, orange, or yellow.

Some Obsidian material comes from fragments of the shards that fell on New Britannia from the shattered moons during the Cataclysm.

“I told you, Aren, everything has its opposite. As I represent the ancient Virtues, the magic of the shard represents dominion. You must destroy it or the Virtues will have no space to take hold, no room to grow.”

“All right,” Aren said with a sigh. “How do I destroy magic purpose?” “By destroying the great shards,” she said. “There are two: one in the place where the rivers cross, and the other in the seat of Obsidian power.”

[2]

The sorcerous founder of the Obsidian Order erroneously attempted to read the Litany of the Dark through a black obsidian lens (the Pool of Destiny) and thus received a warped interpretation of the Litany.

“The First Obsidian Eye used the Destiny Pool as a lens to read the words written here, in the Litany of the Dark. He did not understand that you cannot see clearly through a clouded lens, no matter how powerful.” [3]

However, as indicated by their color (and their purpose), the obsidian used in constructing the three lenses is NOT black obsidian from the lunar shards. The name and color of each obsidian Lens is related to its intrinsic Principle:

  • Cerulean: resembling the blue of the sky — Truth
  • Xanthous: marked by yellow coloration — Love
  • Vermillion: a brilliant scarlet red — Courage
