Grouping[edit]

I'm confused as to how skills should be grouped here. This seems to be the main category, but some items are in subgroups, but not others.

Here is how I would envision it:

Category:Skills

Category:Combat Skills
Category:Weapon Skills
Category:Blades Combat Skills
Category:Ranged Combat Skills
Category:Bludgeon Combat Skills
Category:Polearms Combat Skills
Category:Armor Skills
Category:Shield Combat Skills
Category:Gambeson Combat Skills
Category:Mail Combat Skills
Category:Plate Combat Skills
Category: Craft Skills
Category:Gathering Skills
Mining Skills
Forestry Skills
Agriculture Skills
Field Dressing Skills
Foraging Skills
Refining Skills
Smelting Skills/Recipes
Milling Skills/Recipes
Textiles Skills/Recipes
Tanning Skills/Recipes
Butchery Skills/Recipes
Production Skills
Blacksmithing Skills/Recipes
Carpentry Skills/Recipes
Tailoring Skills/Recipes
Cooking Skills/Recipes
Alchemy Skills/Recipes
Category:Magic Skills
Life Magic Skills
Death Magic Skills
Sun Magic Skills
Moon Magic Skills
Earth Magic Skills
Air Magic Skills
Water Magic Skills
Fire Magic Skills
Chaos Magic Skills

Each individual skill page would be assigned both the main Skills category, and the subcategory to which it belongs, but possibly not group topics (i.e., Gathering would be good to have in Category: Craft Skills, but probably not in the base Category: Skills list). Pages that are important to the category, but are not individual skills, can have a pipe character placed after the category name to push them to the top of the category, outside the main alphabetical list.

Thoughts? --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 16:02, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Ya, it is messy right now because because it is a mish-mash of the old wiki's categories, this wiki's categories and me trying to fix it up as I moved it over.
I would recommend reading wikipedia's Category organization and I'll be using the terminology from it.
Category:Skills is a Topic category. What is the benefit of leaving the individual skills in that category? I think the individual skills should be diffused into the subcategories.
Gathering, Life Magic, etc are "Skill Systems" and I agree that Category:Craft Skills and Category:Magic Skills would be a good place for them. Hrm, maybe we should consider making a Category:Skill Systems to properly differentiate it.
Are you conjoining skills and recipes for crafting?
I think we have 4 different types of pages here.
  1. Individual Skills
  2. Recipes (these are item pages)
  3. Skill System Pages
  4. A single, overall Skills page
Realize that Skills and Category:Skills don't refer to a list of individual skills. But skills, skill systems and everything dealing with skills.
With that in mind here is what I think:

Category:Skills - Topic Category for all thing related to Skills

Category:Combat Sigil - Topic Category for all things related to Combat Skill Systems
Category:Offensive Schools
Category:Blades Combat Skills - Set Category for Blades Combat Skills
Category:Ranged Combat Skills - ...
Category:Bludgeon Combat Skills
Category:Polearms Combat Skills
Category:Defensive Schools
Category:Shield Combat Skills
Category:Gambeson Combat Skills
Category:Mail Combat Skills
Category:Plate Combat Skills
Category: Craft Sigil
Category:Gathering Ring
Category:Mining Skills
Category:Forestry Skills
Category:Agriculture Skills
Category:Field Dressing Skills
Category:Foraging Skills
Category:Refining Ring
Category:Smelting Skills
Category:Milling Skills
Category:Textiles Skills
Category:Tanning Skills
Category:Butchery Skills
Category:Smelting Recipes - Set of Smelting Recipes (this would contain stuff like Iron Bar which is both a recipe and an item)
Category:Milling Recipes
Category:Textiles Recipes
Category:Tanning Recipes
Category:Butchery Recipes
Category:Production Ring
Category:Blacksmithing Skills
Category:Carpentry Skills
Category:Tailoring Skills
Category:Cooking Skills
Category:Alchemy Skills
Category:Blacksmithing Recipes
Category:Carpentry Recipes
Category:Tailoring Recipes
Category:Cooking Recipes
Category:Alchemy Recipes
Category:Magic Sigil
Category:Life Magic Skills
Category:Death Magic Skills
Category:Sun Magic Skills
Category:Moon Magic Skills
Category:Earth Magic Skills
Category:Air Magic Skills
Category:Water Magic Skills
Category:Fire Magic Skills
Category:Chaos Magic Skills
Which is pretty similar to yours with just a few things renamed and the "Recipes/Skills" separated out.
So, for example, Skills would go in Category:Skills, Water Magic would go in Category:Magic Skill Systems, and Ice Fist would go in Category:Water Magic Skills. -- Fenyx4 (talk) 18:14, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
Hmm... I'm not sure I like the term "Skill Systems", but I see your point. I'm trying to think of how it will be presented in the game, and it seems they are broken down into Skill Sigil (Magic Sigil, Combat Sigil, etc), then into a Skill Tree (Life Magic, Blades Combat), which has individual Skills (Healing Touch, Thrust). Perhaps Sigil/Tree/Skill would be good terms? I'll probably get to renaming and reorganizing these tonight.
I wasn't thinking of merging the skills and recipes, but rather doing something similar to the other wiki where we had a page that was a semantic query of the recipes, which allowed a better way to view the category in a sortable way. I wasn't worried about doing that at this point since I don't know where we stand with semantic. --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 19:46, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
I don't care much for "Skill System" either but I could have sworn that was what DarkStarr used in his post. Now when I look again it isn't there. I've modified my tree above. I renamed all the "Systems" to match the wording DarkStarr used in his post "Sigil", "School", "Ring".
I think we should have semantic query of the recipes and category. The categories help, well, categorize things so we can more easily query them with SMW but they aren't good for content as they can't be formatted for easy consumption and that is where SMW generated lists come in. (I'm of the opinion that readers shouldn't be steered towards Categories.) -- Fenyx4 (talk) 21:14, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
I agree with you about the naming, and SMW + categories. I'll start looking at these next. --Browncoat Jayson (talk) 21:18, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
