Fire Elemental is a hostile elemental creature. These can also be summoned by learning the Summon Fire Elemental skill.

Fire Elemental basic attacks are physical damage attacks, and are not magical damage attacks. Fire Resistance has no effect on these attacks.
Higher level Fire Elementals do cast fire magic spells on you, that are magical damage.
Fire elementals can apply a durability debuff called Weaken Metal (Fire).
Fire Elementals can drop Fire Elemental Essences as loot.

Elementals are powerful beings that mages can summon to fight for them. Summoned Elementals are surrounded by magical bindings that keep them under the thrall of the summoning mage whereas wild elementals are free of these constraints.^[1]
